What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

A schematic of a boys head showing a simple picture of the brain. Different elements are labelled, e.g. Prefrontal cortex, Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland, Brain stem, hippocampus, Cerebellum. It is being used to explain how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

HOW CAN SOLUTION FOCUSED HYPNOTHERAPY , POSSIBLY, PROVIDE A SOLUTION FOR ALL THESE THINGS? Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Phobias, Fear of Flying, OCD, PTSD, Panic Attacks, Low Self-Esteem, Lack of Confidence, Insomnia,  PAIN, Over Eating, SMOKING, Stress, Overwhelm.

AND HOW CAN IT HELP DEVELOP RESILIENCY, A RELAXED AND CALM MINDSET AND WELLBEING ?

The One Brain Two Mind Model.

From the solution focused hypnotherapy (SFHT) perspective the clue is in the phrase “One Brain, two minds”. SFHT thinks of the brain as comprising of two parts, the primitive mind and the intellectual mind.

The primitive mind comprising of the Amygdala, Hippocampus and Hypothalamus, and an ancient part of the mind, which keeps us safe. It is the fight / flight / freeze part of the brain.

Then there is the intellectual mind (i.e. Pre-frontal cortex). The intellectual mind is your conscious part. And it’s the part we use to interact with the world. This second part is connected to a vast intellectual resource.

The general characteristics of these two minds

  • The primitive minds:
  • Always sees things from the worse possible perspective.
  • It is ever vigilant and obsessional.
  • It can’t innervate. What happened yesterday will happen tomorrow.
  • It always operates from the primitive parameters of Anxiety (fear), Anger and Depression.
  • It’s the part that worries, imagines the worse, doesn’t take risks. It is all consuming and can’t relax. If it does take a risk then it’s done with over preparation, with loads of contingency plans in place and is fearing the worse.
  • It’s where we blame, get jealous, bitter, feel disempowered etc.
  • This part is like a tantrum-ing child, trying to control the external environment.
  • The intellectual mind:
  • It gets answers based on a proper assessment of the situation.
  • It generally gets things right and is very positive.
  • It’s the part you use when you are relaxed, reflective, creative, work things out and where you feel comfortable to take risks. When you take risk that don’t work out, you think to yourself “Well I gave it a go and I learnt something”.
  • It’s where we use our imagination to imagine positive compelling futures that have not yet happened. Its were we vision and visualise positively.
  • It’s were we have RESILIENCY, a Relaxed , Calm mindset and Wellbeing.
  • We act as sensible well adjusted grown ups, who are in control no matter what the world throws at them.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy – Cause of mental ill health

Just by thinking about the two minds, you can determine which mind you spend most of your time in and which one you would prefer to spend time in. And it doesn’t take too long to realise which mind causes all the mental health issues listed above (primitive mind). These mental health issues are expressions and behaviours of the fight, flight and freeze response.

You will learn about these responses in the FREE consultation. the stress bucket analogy explains why, when we spend time in the primitive mind, we exhibit those mentally unhealthy behaviours. As a result we get to know what to do about it.

However, the main focus of SFHT is to recover access to the intellectual mind which gives us a balanced expanded perspective. This enables us to come up with our own answers to the situations in life as well as giving us access to resources and capabilities which had been temporarily blocked by the fight / flight / freeze response.

I’m sure you are familiar with what that blocked feeling, feels like! As well as what that lovely released feeling feels like when we go on holiday (into the intellectual mind) and let go of all those temporary stresses and attachments. Consequently we find ourselves freed from the grip of the limited, restrictive primitive mind and can think properly, learn and have a more choice in life.

Recovering Access to the Intellectual Brain.

So how do we recover access to the intellectual mind and its full capacity and capabilities? The answer to that question are the SFHT sessions. In those sessions you will learn how to gain access to the intellectual brain and experience its benefits. However in the meantime here are some clues:

Imagination
We’ll use our intellectual mind’s capability to imagine a more compelling future to think beyond the limitations of the primitive mind. In SFHT we use the Miracle Question. Remember you don’t have to believe that compelling future, you just have to imagine it!

Where you will learn how the brain works and how to use it to support you in dealing with anxiety. Hypnotherapy is a recognised strategy for helping with this.

Trance
Through trance we can help develop a more relaxed mindset, which helps optimise our sleep patterns. Once we sleep better we can start using our (REM) processing capacity more effectively. So that the events of the day are moved from the emotional mind to the narrative mind where you have control over them. We wake up fresh and ready to get on with our day. Imagine that!
Peas
The 3Ps strategy. In reaction to the primitive mind we are encouraged to “Take positive action”, “Have positive interactions”, “Think Positive Thoughts”. When we do that notice how different you begin to feel?! In essence we start to empty our stress bucket!
