What are phobia and how can hypnotherapy help?

Phobias are defined as irrational fears to external trigger such as events (e.g. taking a flight) or objects (e.g. buttons, needles etc). They are irrational because there is no rational reason for us reacting in the way that we do towards items such as buttons, insects etc. When we are in our rational minds there is either no reaction or in the case of insects and other small animals a healthy and appropriate regards and response to them. However when we do have a phobia the fear feels real! Thankfully hypnotherapy can help with phobia.

How Phobia are created

The formation of phobia is associated with unpleasant and sometimes traumatic events, which occurred in our early years. Alternatively they can be created in our adult lives during highly stressful and vulnerable times. They can even be learnt from authoritative figures such as our parents. If one of our parents were frightened by spiders, then we may have learnt to respond in the same way.

Phobias are created when we are feeling overwhelmed. When overwhelmed we respond to life from the primitive mindset of fight, flight or freeze. When we are in that fight, flight mindset we need to find a cause for this unpleasant feeling. Consequently we look outside of ourselves to the events that are going on around us, or even objects, and blame that event or object as being the cause. From that moment onwards whenever that event or objects comes into our vicinity we will react in that fight, flight way, the way we did when the sensitising event occurred.

Phobia whether they are a fear of flying, fear of needles, buttons, clowns, dentists etc. can be extremely debilitating. They can have a significant impact on our lives. Often preventing us receiving the help we need (e.g. medical procedures etc.). Hypnotherapy can help with phobia and help you get your life back.

The GOOD news is that the causes of phobia is well understood.

How can Hypnotherapy help with phobia?

It can help by:

  • Explaining how they are formed. Using the one brain two minds model. The more we have an understanding of how phobia are created, the more we can do something about them. They are not something that happens to us, there is a process. Understanding that process brings a more rational perspective to our reactions to the events and things that would have created that fear response.
  • Reducing our anxiety in general. When we have a sense of wellbeing we are more able to think rationally around the situations, such as phobias, in our lives. Anxiety is reduced by increasing our levels of serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter which gives us the sense of wellbeing. It is created when we think positively, act positively and interact positively.
  • De-sensitize the phobic response and creating a more appropriate response in its place.
