Insomnia:

Poor sleep leads to worrying. Worrying leads to poor sleep. Worrying about sleep is like your mind trying to fight itself. That’s a horrible place to be.”

Mind

1 in 3 people suffer from insomnia. The demands of our modern day lives often clash with our natural process of going to sleep (i.e. night shift work, cost of living, work overwhelm). Hypnotherapy can help with insomnia.

If you have suffered from insomnia you are familiar with its effects. It robs us of our quality of life. When we are fatigued we can’t think clearly, don’t have the energy to get involved in life. When we don’t get involved with life, we loose the support and stimulus that every day life brings us. This lack of stimulus makes us feel more miserable and anxious, so we don’t sleep well. We end up in a vicious cycle as described in the above quote. Our mental health suffers.

GOOD NEWS! Solution focused hypnotherapy can help re-establishes healthy sleep patterns.

Causes of insomnia

I’m sure you are already aware of some of the reasons but lets list them any way:

  • Stress and Anxiety – One of the primary causes of insomnia is anxiety, stress, worry, overconcern. When we feel anxious about the events and situations in our life, we become alert. This is especially true when we are overwhelmed and our anxiety levels are at their highest. In reaction we can experience insomnia, insomnia is our body mind system supporting us in times of danger. It is keeping us awake and alert so that we are ready to defend ourselves against anxiety provoking dangers.
  • Life events – for example the menopause, bereavements. These life changing events disrupt our sleep and affect our ability to function effectively in life causing compounding anxiety and stress.
  • Illness and Medication: Illness can affect sleep. Some side effects of medication cause disrupted sleep pattern.

(Note: In the case of illness and medication, your primary carer is your doctor, the NHS etc. and you should always consult them first. Hypnotherapy can support as a secondary service in relieving anxiety around the illness.)

  • Pain – Acute and Chronic pain can disrupt our sleep.
  • Habit – Sometimes when the stress and anxiety has subsided we can find ourselves trapped in the habit of unhealthful sleep patterns simply because it has become the new normal, i.e. waking up at 3am. I found myself waking up at 3am just to get that feeling of “oh I have still 4 more hours to go” – How crazy and interesting is that?

How can Hypnotherapy help with Insomnia?

Solution focused hypnotherapy sees unhealthful sleep patterns as a symptom rather than a cause. Another way of thinking about it is that we don’t need to re-learn how to sleep, that comes naturally, but we do need to create the conditions (or remove the blocks) that allow us to fall asleep naturally.

Hypnotherapy helps restore that lovely natural sleep by:

  • Explaining how the minds works and how sleep loss causing anxiety is created and more importantly what we can do about it. With understanding comes clarity and action.
  • Helping you regain balance in your life and wellbeing by raising your levels of the well-being neurotransmitter, serotonin. When we have a sense of wellbeing we take control of our lives and make the positive choices which lead to better sleep.
  • Whilst hypnotherapy can’t do anything in curing illness, medicine side effects or life events (such as the menopause) we can do something about any associated anxieties. This helps with cope better and can support recovery.
  • Hypnotherapy can help you get back in control, so that there’s no need for insomnia (i.e. the need for alertness at night time).
  • Hypnotherapy can help you see and acquire a more relaxed mindset. After all we can’t be anxious and relaxed at the same time. Sleep naturally comes as we relax.
  • And finally as part of hypnotherapy you get to listen to a lovely relaxing mp3 before you go to sleep at night. This will help enormously.
